Rangers face Hibernian this evening in the third meeting of the sides this season. Both games have been close, with a goal to spare in our favour in each, and I anticipate another close one this evening. Rangers will be lifted not only by the response but by the manner of the performance which destroyed Hearts last Sunday.
That’s where Rangers need to be. There is thirteen cup finals left in this title race and Rangers must be on it in every single one. Do that and we will win this league, slips will be costly so Rangers must ensure it doesn’t come our end. We can be confident however, form under Gio at Ibrox has been secure and at times extremely competent.
It’s away from home that questions will remain but that is for another day, this is a big one and yes another must win, but here at Rangers they all are. However, I’ll counter that and say if the players apply themselves as they did against Hearts then we will do well, not everything is on the manager or tactics even if questions are fair. Sometimes good old Heart and spirit are equally as important, they can’t be made to chase, close down, track runs, that must come from within and maybe that wake up call has come.
Ryan Jack misses out sadly after being on the end of a shocking challenge on Sunday which the official deemed no foul. Remarkable considerable the punishment he deemed fair for our players with cautions for Balogun and Bassey. Ryan Jack has been superb but equally impressive was John Lundstram and we have to hope he keeps that stride for the foreseeable, if he can we might just have cracked that engine room. That’s the difference from previous week, that desire, that spirit and fight, not only that they know exactly when to kick and put the foot in.
That’s been a welcome plus and I hope that continues tonight even in Ryans Absence. The rest of the team picks itself really, Glen Kamara replaces Ryan Jack and Rangers go same team which beat Hearts otherwise.
Rangers line up; McGregor, Tavernier (C), Bassey, Balogun, Goldson, Kamara, Lundstram, Aribo, Arfield, Morelos and Kent.
A strong bench also: McLaughlin, Amad, Davis, Ramsey, Sands, Zukowski, Roofe, Sakala, Barisic.
Good luck to the Famous Glasgow Rangers this evening….
First half action –
4 mins – PENALTY RANGERS! Kent runs at McGinn who takes him down, brilliant by Kent who commits the full back and he is rash.
GOOAAALLLL! Straight down the middle from Tavernier, 1-0 Rangers!
7 mins – CHANCE! Arfield drifts behind Rocky and he scoops a volley just wide, he had time!
13 mins – SUBSTITUTION Leon Balogun off and Borna Barisic on. Not good news, Looks like his hamstring.
18 mins – Alfredo floated curling effort tipped wipe by Macey, resulting corner Arfield sends wide.
19 mins – CHANCE! First real opportunity for Hibs as Nisbet tests palms of McGregor, Doigs cross isn’t stopped.
21 mins – CAUTION 📒 Barisic is late and clumsy on Jasper.
28 mins – CAUTION 📒 Goldson is late on Mitchell, Tavernier losses ball and Goldson is committed. Poor from both. Resulting FK from Henderson tests McGregor who pushes it away from his right.
33 mins – Tavernier drags a shot wide after finding space each of the box, it’s a weak effort.
35 mins – CHANCE! Rangers close down well and Arfield wins it and exchanges with Kamara, Morelos is in but turns away and drags a poor shot wide, I don’t think he knew his position there.
38 mins – Arfield again drifts behind Rocky and heads brilliantly past Macey but flag was long up, Offside looked correct without benefit of replay.
41 mins – Kent fires wide after good work from Morelos who skinned Porteous.
45 mins – Good press from Lundstram and Kent drags a shot wide.
HT Rangers 1 Hibernian 0
Half time summary –
Rangers started brightly and early penalty the right decision. Been a niggly game and Walsh seems reluctant to stop Hibs pulling or pushing which is breaking up play. Rangers been bright but you feel better decision making and a second goal will come but we need to press on.
Hibs carry danger with Nisbet and Henderson capable of finding space, a second goal would help settle things
Arfield has found good space and Alfredo is linking play really well but not quite found his range as yet. He and Kent look energetic with Kamara’s runs helping create space. Rangers have to keep it tight and hunt an early second which should keep Hibs out, we don’t want this going too long with them still in with a chance.
Get the ball forward quickly and plenty room for Kent to get at the defence. Quick start to second would be welcomed.
Second half action –
50 mins – CAUTION 📒 Rocky pulls back Morelos and is cautioned immediately.
57 mins – GOOAAALLLL! Brilliant pass by Tavernier who finds Morelos just behind the defence, a brilliant run and the 🐃 lashes it home superbly! 2-0!
60 mins – CAUTION 📒 Stevenson late on Kamara and he is in the book.
74 mins – CHANCE! Tav powers forward and ball through is chipped at goal by Alfredo but well saved by Macey.
SUBSTITUTION – Sakala and Ramsey replace Arfield and Aribo, both have put in a good shift.
78 mins – CAUTION 📒 Tavernier is late on Jasper and he is in the book.
79 mins – Rangers win it and break, Kent’s shot loops deflected just over.
82 mins – Quick corner releases Kent who drifts one wide.
88 mins – CHANCE! Cadden twists into the box and tests McGregor, far too easy on our left and AM deals with it well.
90 mins – SAVE! Allan McGregor keeps the zero as he goes high to keep out Jasper with a terrific stop.
Rangers finishing like a game that’s been done a long time.
FT Rangers 2 Hibernian 0
Stadium Man of the match – Alfredo Morelos
Full time analysis –
Comfortable victory for Rangers with the side largely in charge throughout. A lovely second by Morelos the difference as Rangers saw out a comfortable second half with relative ease. A late Hibs rally threatened to get a goal back but good keeping by McGregor kept the zero for successive games.
Solid performance overall but game comfortably done at 2-0. Big positives for Rangers, aside of a clean sheet is the form of John Lundstram. Morelos gets the plaudits but he was once again really very good and can be proud of his performance, that midfield position is now his and with Ryan Jack, although missing tonight, we look a lot stronger.
Then there is Morelos, whilst we all discussed who was our key man in Kent or Aribo he has stepped forward to lead this team superbly. He looks like the Alfredo of his best form, slimmed down and sharp but more so his attitude looks like he wants it.
A firing 🐃 handing out Capital punishment, that’s just what we want.
Onwards we go.
