Rangers appoint new Head of Communications / Transfer update / Revolution podcast

Rangers have this week formally replaced David Graham with long term Media Employee Nick Thomson becoming Rangers Head of Communications.

Nick has shared responsibility for Rangers media output with Alasdair Morrison since November, with Alasdair looking after the board side of things and Nick the footballing department (covered previously on the blog). However Alasdair’s time at the club has now come to an end naturally with Nick taking full control.

So what does it mean for the club and the fans? Well Nick knows the club inside out, serving throughout the media team since 2015 firstly as a content producer. He then became Communications and content Manager in August 2020 before assuming his new position this week.

Nick is young and enthusiastic, extremely pleasant to deal with and more importantly is well liked amongst the media. Why is this important? Well look at the reaction David Graham got and the barriers which instantly appeared with the press because of his history, I don’t mean that as a slight on David either.

This isn’t the case here and is a positive step by the club. Nick is extremely close to James Bisgrove and well liked, so it is the natural step.

Nick is also very pro Fan Media and with James Bisgrove believes in forward facing engagement with the fans, encouraging me and others to do club interviews. When we got access to David Milburn customer service and Greg Marshall MyGers updates, Nick encouraged that throughout and that will continue.

There will be a sizeable fan engagement from the club next week also.

Being head of coms at Rangers is a difficult job, the balance between being firm and also welcoming is a difficult job but Nick has all the experience to do well and as a nice guy and as a Rangers fan I wish him all the best.

Chris Jack today broke major transfer news by revealing Rangers are closing in on a treble swoop for Sam Lammers, Jose Cifuentes and Cyriel Dessers.

Lammers of Atlanta is said to be extremely close with positive discussions in last few days and a £3m deal and is said to be the closest of the three. Cyriel Dessers is another target but it’s believed the deal Rangers want is around £4m and it’s doubtful whether we will go higher, of the three mentioned this is said to have the most work to do, the transfer fee may cause Rangers to look elsewhere if Cremonese don’t deal.

Lammers, 26 and Dessers 28 aren’t exactly prolific recently, Dessers with a better history, but this is an area that we have to trust Michael Beale and where he will truly be judged. Both records are questionable and immediately questions will be asked by the support.

I have no information on either and how true this is but Chris being a long term reliable source, first to break GVB sacking for example, means there is certainly weight behind the story. This is also Chris’s information which I have asked to print so he deserves and should get any credit if the deals come true.

As for Jose Cifuentes that is one I have discussed before and previous reports indicate on the way to concluding, Rangers keen to have the player arrive this summer with a deal of around £750k-£1.5m being mentioned. I think it’s fair to say once Fabrizio Romano talks about it online you know there is a truth to it.

So three potential deals on top of the arrivals of Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling and Jack Butland, mean Rangers are being active and quickly. With a potential outlay of £8m for the three, coupled with the arrival of the above mentioned three, you would imagine players will start to leave very soon also as the squad is extremely bloated.

It’s all go transfer wise, interesting to see if these deals happen and what positions we look at next.

Podcast with Martyn Ramsay 👆🏻

Thank you to Martyn Ramsay of Heart and Hand podcast who sat with me to discuss Revolution 1986-1992, his best selling Rangers book.

We have recorded a podcast for you to listen which we discuss the book and that period of Rangers dominance heralded by Graeme Souness.

The book is fantastic and a real insight into how Souness made Rangers dominant in Scotland from a fifth place finish when he arrived, not to mention inside the Maurice Johnstone transfer.

One of the best Rangers books of recent times and we also discuss Martyns podcast sensation Dominant which details the period in depth.

You can buy it here https://heartandhand.co.uk/revolution/
