16 mins – GOAL! Newcastle pick up on slack Rangers play, played into Almiron who rolls it into the corner. 0-1
Rangers haven’t threatened, Newcastle more dangerous and have a deserved lead.
22 mins – Half way through and Rangers, so far, a long way off it. Newcastle clearly a classy side but Rangers struggling to get into any rhythm.
30 mins – Rangers first shot at goal from Lammers, easily dealt with but a better passage of play from Rangers.
32 mins – Dowell with a snap shot wide after good play from Lammers.
34 mins – Trippier in space finds Almiron who lobs one over.
37 mins – Jack finds Tavernier who wins his own pass to Dowell who slips in Cantwell, he’s under pressure and slips it wide but a better run beyond.
38 mins – Change – Ibrox is upstanding as Allan McGregor takes an ovation as he leaves the field of play. On comes his successor Jack Butland.
Half time – Rangers 0 Newcastle 1
Newcastle bossing the first half on and off rhe ball, quality throughout and Rangers struggling to cope with the runners from full back and midfield. We have tweaked formation to try and change which brought a few half chances but Rangers will want more on the ball second half.
Couple of factors obviously, Newcastle are English Premiership, have spent millions and are coached very well. Secondly it’s pre season and we are very much an early work in progress so no criticisms at all.
Second half –
Subs – Sakala and Balogun on, Davies and Dowell off.
46 mins – Lundstram shot wild and wide.
60 mins – Subs Off Lundstram, Jack, Barisic, On Ridvan, Raskin, Hagi
64 mins – GOAL Rangers! 1-1! Lammers onto a short back pass and rolls it past the keeper for the equaliser. 1-1
70 mins – Subs Off, Lammers, Sima, Souttar and Cantwell. On Rice,Yfeko, Matondo and Wright.
80 mins – Sub Off, Tavernier. On Lowry.
84 mins – Hagi drives a shot wide after a run from Sakala.
87 mins – GOAL Newcastle. Anthony Gordon run and cross is looped home by Harrison. 1-2
90 mins – Shot! lowry almost equalises but a good save.
FULL TIME – Rangers 1 Newcastle 2
Summary –
A late goal wins the pre season spoils for Newcastle, a very impressive performance by the visitors who look every bit a well coached Champions league side. Move the ball very well and spring the press well.
As for Rangers, a very good work out, worked the players and the team as a collective so hopefully we will see the benefits. Still lots more business to come and players will leave so this team tonight won’t resemble how we go but there is little flashes.
Two home friendlies with Hamburg and then Olympiakos coming up which will test the squad further.
Bright performances from Souttar, who looks rock sold, Nico Raskin who will be huge this season and Sam Lammers. All in all, never nice to get best but in flashes and for the fitness this a very worthwhile exercise.
