Tav-tastic Rangers storm past Dortmund in Euro glory night

Most people, myself included, were hoping this tie would still be alive this evening with the possibility of a roaring Ibrox to boost the players.

What we got was one of the greatest European results and performances in my lifetime.

Rangers went to Dortmund and crushed Borussia in their own back garden. It was a performance that took Europe by surprise and it may just have angered the Germans. I expect a response, I even still think they are favourites and before any ball was kicked would have been confident they could win in Glasgow.

So it’s still all to play for and an intriguing night ahead. How we go about this is interesting, I don’t think we can afford to sit and invite them on us but I expect them to come at us like a steam train. That will leave opportunities for Alfredo and Kent if they can perform like last week.

So it’s all here, but on Walter’s Birthday, what would we all give for a classic Rangers performance.

The men charged with that responsibility is the same team that went to Germany and got that famous result.

Rangers go McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Bassey, Barisic as the GK and back four. In the middle it’s Lundstram and Jack with Joe Aribo tasked with getting forward. Kent, Morelos and Arfield, who will tuck in from the right, make up the front three. With twelve subs there is plenty options should we need it.

Rangers take a 4-2 lead into this gargantuan match, normally we would be comfortable and looking forward to this, however this is far from over.

Good luck to the famous, as someone once said, let’s go…..

First half action

3 mins – Early header for Alfredo which is harmlessly over.

5 mins – Dortmund corner causes mayhem and it’s off the post, Rangers stop but get it clear.

6-9 mins – Dortmund in a rhythm, anytime it goes near Kent he is taken out by Meunier.

16-19 mins – Four Dortmund corners as they pen Rangers in, everyone is cleared by Joe Aribo but it’s all Borussia.

20 mins – PENALTY RANGERS! Brilliant by Kent as he takes his man who brings him down.

GOOOOAAAALLLL! James Tavernier scores and Rangers lead 1-0!

24 mins – Brandt with a great snapshot and McGregor reacts to claw it clear.

30 mins – GOAL Dortmund 1-1. Poor from Goldson as he scuffs his clearance, Bellingham is in to cooly finish.

35 mins – CHANCE! Arfield in after great pass from Aribo, his shot is saved and Morelos shot is blocked on the line, so close!

36 mins – Dortmund break and Malen forces another great save from McGregor.

39 mins – CAUTION 📒 Lundstram takes one for the team as he goes to ground and stops a promising Dortmund attack.

41 mins – GOAL Dortmund and they lead 1-2 on the night. Poor clearance again from Goldson and Rangers are too deep as Malen flicks it in.

44 mins – Malen screws an effort just wide and then Meunier almost connects as Dortmund almost square the tie on the night.

Half time summary

Dortmund are a good side. Wave after wave of attack especially down our right hand side where Malen is causing no end of issues. Rangers haven’t kept the ball and not made the most of promising breaks they have had.

Now all to play for but Tavs penalty keeps us ahead by one. Next goal is vital but Rangers have to get twenty yards up the pitch other wise we are simply asking for trouble.

Ibrox a bit deflated but in truth lucky to be 1-2 at half time. Goldson was culpable twice so to get to HT a small consolation.

Big second half ahead for Rangers. It’s 5-4 on aggregate and most certainly game on.

Second half action

HT Sub – Leon Balogun replaces Borna Barisic.

Early switch, Rangers are going three at the back with Lundstram dropping between Balogun and Goldson.

50 mins – Morelos shot on the spin as Rangers push, good save by the keeper but better, we look happier with 3 at the back. Corner is cleared.

52 mins – CAUTION 📒 Bellingham into the book.

55 mins – CAUTION 📒 Schulz for pulling back Tavernier.

57 mins – Morelos again as he gets the shot away, Rangers are building again.

Brilliant by Bassey as he gets down left, his cross is missed and Tavernier fires it in as Ibrox erupts! What a moment!

Unbelievable scenes! No hold on! It’s a VAR check

It’s ruled out! That looks so harsh!

69 mins – Dortmund go straight up the other end and Rangers scramble it clear. 2-2

74 mins – CHANCE! Rangers break clear from a corner and Kent is in, a heavy touch means he is caught by Schulz and Borussia survive.

Rangers have been brilliant this half.

90 mins – Kent again what a run and his low shot is saved, he has been immense this second half!

Full time – Rangers 2 – 2 Borussia Dortmund

What a second half from Rangers! A tactical stroke of genius by the manager as his change to three at the back benefitted us hugely. Bassey and Tavernier producing the goods in a magnificent second half, as Rangers fought back to draw on the night but win the tie 6-4.

I can’t speak highly enough of Gio’s decision to go three at the back which changed everything but individually the players were magnificent. A huge win for the club and the favourites, Dortmund, are out!

Massive massive performance in the second half and superb mental strength to turn around a very difficult first half. Morelos and Kent can hurt anyone in this competition, absolutely superb by both. The captain steals the headlines and he was superb. But Bassey was unreal and has made the left back position his own.

Superb Rangers, deserve all the credit for a magnificent victory in this tie.

Play up the Glasgow Rangers 👏🏻
