Calvin Bassey arrives at Rangers

Nobody loves a surprise signing more than the Rangers support. In recent days nobody has had a sniff of club announcements as both Charlie Lindsay and yesterday Calvin Bassey signed for the club.

Credit to that goes to Ross Wilson who has tightened the football department. I had previously said last week that Rangers weren’t talking to anyone regarding our transfer business, that also includes fan media, I said when we would hear about signings is when the club announced it and to be fair that was shown yesterday. Everything is tight and being conducted professionally, that is fantastic to see.

Charlie Lindsay wasn’t a surprise as such because we had covered this last year and he has already turned out for us. He’s a player with a lot of talent so one to watch for the future.

Calvin Bassey was a big surprise however. He has signed a pre-contract and will arrive on a four year contract and reports suggest for around £230k in compensation.

Not a lot is known about the player. He can play left back and also has experience at Left centre back. He certainly has the stature and has already commented he enjoys a physical battle but is athletic so that will suit our game in Scotland. He doesn’t have any first team football experience but a regular in Leicester’s under 23 side. So he will need time to settle at the club.

He’s a low risk signing and I would imagine one who will be earmarked for a future starting Rangers place. I’d think he would learn from Borna Barisic with a view to taking that position if Borna does move on. We know there was a lot of interest in Borna prior to the global situation of Covid-19. I should imagine Bassey would see some small game time as he settles then more in places to gain experience for such a scenario.

It does solve a problem for us however, naturally left sided he will be a suitable left back competition for Borna. With Calvin on the left and young Nathan Paterson on the right we have two promising youngsters to challenge and grow into first team players.

I would think that has to be the goal of the club, bring through our own or bought in younger talent, help them then flourish and reach their potential.

Leicester fans comments have been decent in terms of Bassey’s ability so I have included a few to look at. It all seems positive.

He’s a player to watch and someone we will have to show patience with whilst he settles into our jersey. But in my humble opinion a strategy worth following from the club. It will be up to him to seize the opportunity of course but it’s a forward thinking move and one I think is good practice.

You can follow him on twitter as the club confirmed his account @CalvinBassey or instagram @bassey.3

Good early business by the club with potential for more judging by Stewart Robertson’s comments. With the team returning to training next week also, a new kit deal off the pitch, strong commercial performance of late and more deals in the pipeline, then yes I am going to allow myself to be positive about seeing the club again.

Even if it’s just behind closed doors I have missed the highs and even the lows of our team. Ok not so much the lows but we all miss our club that’s for sure!

I Look forward to more deals of this nature, nothing beats a surprise announcement. Good work by Ross Wilson and the club
